How to treat a Cast Iron Skillet

Season:

Preheat oven to 3750 F.

Wash skillet in hot, soapy water. Rinse and dry completely.

Apply a thin coating of shortening, vegetable oil or peanut oil with a soft cloth or paper towel to all surfaces of the skillet.

Place skillet, upside down on middle oven rack. You may wish to put a foil-lined baking sheet on bottom rack of oven to catch any drippings.

Cake in oven for 1 ½ hours.

Turn oven off. Allow skillet to cool in oven.

Do’s and Don’ts:

DO clean your skillet after every use with hot water and a plastic scrubber.

DO dry cast iron thoroughly after washing. Spray lightly with cooking oil, wipe dry and store uncovered. [Cast iron needs to be able to breathe.]

DO re-season your skillet after cooking beans or other acidic foods.

DON’T ever put your skillet in a dishwasher…

DON’T store your food in the skillet.
